The Shape Of The Shadow

This book is a collection of stories by the students of a Creative Writing class at Maine College of Art. Reading through their almost confession-like essays I was inspired to create a design that would convey the feel of the typed word. I have chosen a very bold and smudged typewriter font as a decoration to pulled out quotes from each story. Because this book is a collection of essays and poems written by different students I have chosen to place their names and the titles of their pieces on the cover of the book.

I have designed two versions of this book. My second version has a transparent silver paint running through the pages of the book covering all the swear words, which creates a two-sided silver lining. On the one hand, this design decision removes all those uncomfortable moments leaving a clean story for the reader, on the other hand, it is highlighting all the pain, frustration, and emotions the authors were going through when they lived through the events they were describing in a book.
